Shirley takes part in various hobbies during her leisure time, which helped her relieve the pressure from studying. She is talented at dancing, singing, and photography but usually, she chooses to play guitar and piano. “Music is a cure for people.” This let her be able to ease the tensity of learning for short time and immerse herself in the world of music.
When the academic pressure is high, she will first put down the things at hand, pick up the camera, go out to breathe fresh air, and take a group of photos. After meditating, she can devote herself to a new round of learning efficiently. “Finding balance is of utmost importance.”
When she first entered university, she was a little overwhelmed because of the university’s massive workload. Luckily, thanks to the good habits she developed in Newton, Shirley retained the high school learning methods in the university. During her study at NIC, teacher Matthew had cultivated her ability to write reports through constant revision and feedback to improve herself. This allows her to develop a weekly plan for herself and implement it strictly in accordance with the plan to avoid her own procrastination. Whenever Shirley feels pressure in her learning process, she would summarize the problems, and seek help from her colleagues and professors.
At Newton, Shirley was elected as the President of the 2018-2019 Student Council. During her time serving as Student Council President, she had accumulated a lot of experience by coordinating Halloween, Christmas events, and monthly birthday parties. This helps improve not only her leadership skills but also her collaboration skills.
After going to the university, she also actively engaged in multiple events, such as CUAT, film clubs, which gave her opportunities to bond with many schoolmates.
“In my opinion, learning is beyond what you learned in the book. It is how you can apply what you learned to solve problems independently and effectively. Your future is in your hands. This is inseparable and depends on every decision you make. I hope our NIC current students will maintain an optimistic attitude during their years in high school and find a work-life balance to attain your best performance.”
